A paragliding experience, By Charly Endres

img_6654In the summer of 1999 I started a motorcycle tour from the Spanish Pyrenees to Andalusia, the province of Granada, as I wanted to get to know that authentic flamenco feeling. My starting point was the wonderful “Valle de Benasque” with its highest mountain, the Pico Aneto (3400m), where I had plenty of possibilities to pursue my hobbies of mountaineering and paragliding. From Granada my tour took me off the main track onyo the old mountain road “Suspiro del Moro”, with a landscape that reminded me of the Spanish Pyrenees, that ended after approximately 50 km, in Almuñécar. During this trip I was treated to fantastic views to the sea and the wonderful villages of Otivar and Lenteji. Above these villages you can in fact start a paragliding trip down to the coast when the weather is right. An absolutely amazing experience with beautiful views, high up in the sky, of the Sierra Nevada on one side and the sea on the other side. 1-paragliderWith the right thermic conditions you can fly from there and end up in the La Herradura bay. After all these kilometres driving down on my motorcycle from the north of Spain, and after Almuñécar discovering La Herradura was a wonderful experience. I had found an enchanting place where I am able to enjoy all my hobbies and dreams:  paragliding, riding my bicycle and my motorcycle, jogging, art, music and relaxing with the most beautiful sunsets. Throw in this mix the generous hospitality that I received and the solid friendships I was able to make and I have found the perfect destination where I want to spend a lot of time.

Paragliding, according to Wikipedia, is a recreational and competitive adventure sport of flying paragliders, which are lightweight, free-flying, foot-launched glider aircrafts with no rigid primary structure. The pilot sits in a harness suspended below a fabric wing comprising a large number of interconnected baffled cells.

Despite not using an engine, a flight can last many hours and cover hundreds of kilometres. By skilful exploitation of sources of a so-called lift, a meteorological phenomenon, the pilot can gain height, often climbing to altitudes of a few thousand metres.
